Overland Camping in North Georgia: Where to Go and What to Pack
You don't have to drive across the country to find world-class overlanding. Right here in North Georgia, the Chattahoochee National Forest offers hundreds of miles of scenic forest roads, creek crossings, and dispersed campsites — most within a couple hours of our shop in Gainesville. Here's where to explore and exactly what to bring.

Where to go
North Georgia's overland country is centered on the Chattahoochee National Forest and the mountain towns around it. A few areas worth your attention:
- Around Suches & Cooper Creek — scenic forest roads, waterfalls, and dispersed camping inside the Cooper Creek and Cooper Creek WMA area, with easy-to-moderate routes that are great for first-timers.
- Dahlonega & the Blue Ridge district — a hub of forest roads and trailheads just north of Gainesville, with everything from mellow scenic drives to rougher routes.
- Helen & the Tray Mountain area — popular for mountain driving and moderate terrain, with big views and good basecamp options.

What to pack
North Georgia weather changes fast and the terrain can get muddy, so pack for comfort and self-reliance.
Sleeping & shelter
A rooftop tent keeps you off the damp ground and sets up in minutes, and an awning like the Taruca 270 gives you dry space when an afternoon storm rolls through.
Power & food
A 12v fridge and a power setup keep food fresh and devices charged across a long weekend — no ice runs required.
Recovery & safety
Those creek crossings and clay climbs catch people out. Carry recovery gear (boards, a kinetic rope, rated shackles), a fire extinguisher, and a first aid kit. Cell service is spotty, so consider a GPS and a cell booster or radio.
Organization
Keep it all manageable with storage solutions so your rig stays tidy and everything has a place.
