How to Build a Toyota 4Runner for Overlanding

Few vehicles are as ready for overlanding out of the box as the Toyota 4Runner. It's tough, reliable, and has a massive aftermarket. Whether you've got a 5th-gen or the new 6th-gen, here's how we'd build a 4Runner into a capable, comfortable overland rig — in the order that makes the most sense.

Toyota 4Runner built for overlanding

Stage 1: Suspension

A loaded 4Runner sits low and works its factory shocks hard. A quality lift and suspension system restores ride height, adds clearance, and is tuned to carry the weight of your gear, bumpers, and rooftop tent. This is the foundation of the build — do it first so everything else is matched to the right ride height.

Stage 2: Wheels and tires

Pair the new suspension with a proper set of wheels and tires. A 33" all-terrain or hybrid tire dramatically improves traction, and the right wheel offset and backspacing keep everything clearing your suspension and fenders.

Stage 3: Armor and protection

Trails throw rocks, ruts, and obstacles at your undercarriage. Skid plates, rock sliders, and bumpers protect the vital bits and give you recovery and accessory mounting points. Explore vehicle parts & accessories for protection that fits the 4Runner.

Stage 4: Recovery gear

With more capability comes more remote travel. Carry recovery gear — boards, a kinetic rope, rated shackles, and ideally a winch — so you can get yourself (or a buddy) unstuck. A Weekender Recovery Kit is a great starting point.

Stage 5: Storage and organization

The 4Runner's cargo area is perfect for a drawer system or modular storage. Keep recovery gear, tools, and kitchen items organized and secure so you're not unpacking the whole truck to find a wrench. A gear roll keeps the small stuff tidy.

Stage 6: Sleeping and shade

Add a roof rack and a rooftop tent to turn the 4Runner into a true basecamp, then add an awning for shade and rain cover. The 4Runner's roofline and payload make it an ideal RTT platform.

Stage 7: Power and a fridge

Finish with a 12v power system — a dual battery or portable power station — to run a 12v fridge, lights, and charging. This is what makes multi-day, off-grid trips comfortable.
