Beginner's Guide to Overlanding: How to Get Started
Overlanding is simple at its core: self-reliant travel to remote places, where the journey is the point. You don't need a $100,000 rig to start — you need a reliable vehicle, a few key pieces of gear, and a plan. Here's how to get into overlanding the smart way.

1. Start with your vehicle
Almost any capable 4x4 or AWD vehicle can overland. Before spending on mods, make sure yours is mechanically sound. When you're ready to upgrade, prioritize in this order:
- Tires — the single biggest capability upgrade. A good all-terrain tire transforms traction and confidence. See wheels and tires.
- Suspension — a quality lift or suspension system adds clearance and handles the extra weight of your gear.
- Protection — skid plates and sliders keep trail obstacles from ending your trip.

2. Recovery gear (don't skip this)
If you go off-pavement, you will eventually get stuck — and self-recovery is part of the deal. A basic kit includes recovery boards, a kinetic rope, rated soft shackles, and gloves. Add a winch as you progress. Browse off-road recovery gear, or grab a ready-made Weekender Recovery Kit and a Factor 55 ProLink for safer winching. Don't forget a fire extinguisher like the Element Fire.
3. Power and a fridge
A 12v power setup keeps your fridge cold, lights on, and devices charged off the grid. You can start with a portable power station and a 12v fridge, then graduate to a hardwired dual-battery system with solar. A fridge instead of a cooler is the upgrade most overlanders say they wish they'd made sooner.
4. Sleeping and camp comfort
A rooftop tent gets you off the ground and set up in minutes, and an awning gives you shade and rain cover for the kitchen. Add a camp chair, a table, and good storage to keep everything organized.
5. Navigation and communication
Cell service disappears fast in the backcountry. A handheld or vehicle GPS keeps you on route, and a GMRS radio or cell booster keeps you in touch and able to call for help.
6. Start small and local
You don't need a cross-country expedition for your first trip. Pick a nearby trail or forest road, camp one night, and learn what you actually use. Right here in our backyard, check out the best overland trails in North Georgia for an easy first adventure.
